About the Artist

My name is John Dorsey. I'm pretty sure that you have no idea who I am, have never heard of me before. As I write this (late November, 2015), my website is not yet a year old. I've just now started advertising its (and by extension, my) existence. If I can assume that you intentionally landed on this particular page, I should also assume that you're at least mildly curious, so...

While always having an artistic bent, my interest in photography began when I was in my freshman year of high school. During a semester in my junior year, I was permitted to work two hours a day in a local photography studio for class credit. That experience served as the extent of my formal training, such as it was. In 1990, I started a business that specialized in wedding and portrait photography. What began as a weekends-only side business soon grew into a seven-days-a-week monster and in the ten years that I conducted that little experiment I personally photographed over 250 weddings. The portrait work was a mix of studio and location settings and included every type of portrait from individual subjects to family reunions, from casual settings to formal to boudoir. But after ten years, I was burned out. I closed my business and sold every piece of photographic equipment that I owned.

Another ten years passed and, with an almost imperceptible nudge from my son, I bought a digital camera, with the firmly held belief that photography was best pursued as a hobby. Without the pressures, and with the freedom to create on my own terms, the passion soon returned! So here I am, a few years later with my own website and with the realization that this is what I should have been doing with my life.

Luckily, it's not too late to start!

About the work

While I shoot in digital format, the techniques that I employ are of the traditional photographic arsenal - composition, perspective, proportion, lighting, shutter speed, aperture, ISO setting, etc - and the image is created in the camera. I do not tint; if a scene has a color cast, the cast was natural, though I may have enhanced it by exposure choice.

I do not manipulate my images via computer programs (beyond minor retouching).

Most of my images are small-quantity limited edition giclee prints; there will never be a second printing. I am doing this for two reasons: 1) because I am currently virtually unknown, the demand is not yet high and, 2) to help maintain and enhance any value that, over time, may benefit my patrons, the owners of my prints.

As you can see from my gallery, I don't have a particular 'look' to my body of work by which the viewer might recognize an unfamiliar image as being one of mine. The only consistency is that they're (mostly) nature-based, though that may change too. I may take two photographs five  minutes apart that hold no similarity to the other, as if they were created by different photographers. There are too many ways to photograph, too many moods to convey to limit myself to a particular style or technique. While it may confound some, I wouldn't have it any other way. I hope that my work will never become stagnant or predictable.

If you would like to see my work the way it was intended to be seen (printed, matted, and framed), below is a listing of exhibits and shows in which some of my images are/were included or featured.
